Feather Topper Project

Parchment craft can often take quite a long time when compared to other card making skills and when you’re running a bit late this can really put you off. So here at Purely Parchment Craft we’re trying to come up with designs and ideas that can be used to make effective cards without the hours upon hours of work that are usually associated with parchment craft.

Feathers make great toppers for many different occasions from the signing of the marriage register to just dropping a note off to let someone know you are thinking of them.
They are also wonderfully easy to parchment.

This feather  template can be downloaded for free at the bottom of the page.

To complete this project you will need.

  • Feather topper template downloaded and printed on to white paper.
  • Sharp white pencil
  • Large ball tool (3.0mm)
  • Embossing mat
  • Double-sided tape
  • 5.5×14.5cm Parchment Vellum
  • Eraser
  • Small ball tool (1.5mm)
  • Oil pastels – Blue, purple and black.
  • Potpourri oil and kitchen towel

Trace:

Trace your feather using a sharp white pencil into the centre of the parchment vellum.

Embossing:

ALL embossing is done on the back of the parchment.

Use the small ball tool to emboss the shaft of the feather, try to keep the tip nice and sharp.

Use the large ball tool to emboss the filaments of the feather. Place the ball tool onto the edge of the feather and press down gently, then flick the tool towards the shaft. Repeat this process all the way around the feather. Try to keep all the flicks at the same angle.

To help the feather look more realistic leave random gaps between your flicks so that the feather appears to have shadows cast upon it. These gaps need to be very fine and it may be a good idea to have a little practise at this on a scrap piece of parchment before you begin.

Use the small ball tool to ensure the edges of the feather remains sharp. Also use the small ball tool to emboss the fluffy bits at the bottom of the filaments.

Use the small ball tool to thickly emboss the line drawn by the feather.

Dorse:

Use your oil pastels to colour the back of the parchment (on the same side as the embossing).

To do this apply a thick layer of black oil pastel to the top 1/3rd of your parchment, blue to the middle 1/3rd and purple to the remainder. Put a couple of drops of the potpourri oil onto a piece of folded kitchen towel and use it to smudge the pastels around until they are nice and smooth. Pay careful attention to where the colours lie next to each other as you want them to blend nicely.

To help your feather to really stand out you may wish to mount it onto a piece of black card.
